Gerard Patrick Craughwell ( Irish Gearóid P. Ó Creachmhaoil ; born November 22, 1953 ) is an independent Irish politician who has been a Senator in Ireland since 2014.

Craughwell was born in Galway as one of eleven children and grew up in Salthill (Salthill is Galway's entertainment district). He is married to Helen and they have two children, David and Rebecca.

Education and activity

He originally wanted to join the Irish Army when he was fifteen, but his parents refused to give him the necessary permission. At the age of 16 he worked as a bartender in London in the pub "Hog in the Pound" and after a few months he joined the Kings Division Depot of the Royal Irish Rangers (2nd Battalion). At seventeen he became the youngest Lance Corporal in the regiment. He stayed in the British Army until 1974 . Due to threats, allegedly from the IRA , that he would be shot, he left the British Army after lengthy discussions within the family.

After 1974 he joined the Irish Army (infantry battalion in Renmore Barracks in Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa), where he was a non-commissioned officer and in 1980 a sergeant and instructor in the military training school.

In 1980 he left the army, took over his father's gas business, but the company went bankrupt in 1983 , where he was liable with his private assets and lost almost everything. He took a job as a part-time driver with Underfoot Distributors Ltd Athlone, Co. Westmeath. From 1986 to 1990 he was with Aughinish Alumina Ltd and moved to Limerick . He had to stop working because of a serious back injury. He began studying at Limerick Senior College and graduated from the London School of Economics at the Barbican Center . He received minor teaching at Limerick Senior College and completed a postgraduate diploma in computer science from the University of Limerick (1995). He then started working at Dun Laoghaire Senior College and moved to Dublin . He became Deputy Director of the school and an active member of the Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI), Chairman of the Continuing Education Committee for the TUI Executive Committee and Board member of TUI Credit Union, the only Irish committee member of the Information Technology Certifying Organization CompTIA and from 2012 to 2014 he President of TUI.

Political activity

In September 2014, he was registered as an independent candidate for the election to the Irish Senate ( Seanad Éireann ), was surprisingly elected and started on October 14, 2014 as a member of the Culture and Education Committee. Although he had served in the British armed forces and was a member of the Royal Irish Rangers, he received the vote of ten Sinn Féin members in the election for Senator. He is currently the only independent Senator in the Senate and a member of the joint committee with the Irish Parliament ( Oireachtas ) on Education and Social Protection. He was previously a member of the Fine Gael party , but ruled out re-joining the party.

Presidential election campaign 2018

In 2018, Craughwell announced that he was considering a nomination for the 2018 presidential election, but later withdrew his letter of intent.
