Gerazmach

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gerazmach ( Amharic ግራዝማች grazmač, also Garazmach ) was a military title at the court of the Negus Negest ( emperor ) of Ethiopia and means "commander of the left wing (the imperial troops )". This title is one of the oldest military ranks in Ethiopia and was held by one of the emperor's most important military leaders. Over the centuries the importance of this title declined and it then became one of the lowest military titles. The title of Gerazmach could also be bestowed by administrators of some areas of Ethiopia at this time.
