Gerd Gatzweiler (* 1945 ) is a German Taekwondo trainer, head trainer of the RSC Essen (DJK Rüttenscheider Sportclub e.V.). He is a holder of the 8th Dan (DTU / Kukkiwon).

Athletic career

In 1963 he started Taekwondo, then still "Korean Karate", with the Korean miner Kim Byung-wook, until he went to the German Sport University in Cologne . He then continued to train with Kim Woo-kang , who also came to Germany as a miner and only later returned as a Taekwondo trainer (with the support of Gatzweiler).

In 1968 he passed the 1st Dan exam. His registration number identifies him as the second carrier in Europe; Heinz Wiesemann , also from Essen, is number 1. In 1971 Gatzweiler founded the first non-profit association for Taekwondo in Essen in Rüttenscheid, from which world, European and many German champions were to emerge in the following years.

Success as a trainer

As a trainer in Olympic Taekwondo, he trained the first two German European champions ( Josef Ascanio and Christian Strzysch ) and the first two German world champions ( Rainer Müller 1979, Dirk Jung 1982) as well as the first German winner of an Olympic bronze medal ( Markus Woznicki 1988) . Many of his former students in Europe were also able to achieve titles or top places in the field of shapes.

The Essen native's main interest is the versatility of Taekwondo as a martial art: Hundreds of his students successfully passed black belt exams.
