Dirk Jung

Dirk Jung (born May 1, 1956 in Essen ; † November 7, 2019 ) was a German doctor and an internationally successful heavyweight taekwondo athlete.

Sporting successes

Originally he started with the TKD sport in the North Rhine-Westphalian club RSC Essen under the direction of Gerd Gatzweiler and between 1976 and 1983 he won several German and European championship titles (1978 in Munich and 1980 in Copenhagen) in Taekwondo. At the beginning of the eighties he trained at the "TC Düsseldorf" and together with the first German world champion Rainer Müller , the four-time European champion Richard Schulz and the two-time World Cup third party Helmut Gärtner, he founded the "Top Circle", from which several medals and title holders at European and World Championships. After his bronze medal in 1977 in Chicago , he became the first German heavyweight world champion in Ecuador in 1982 and vice world champion in Copenhagen in 1983 .

Coaching

After his active competitive time, he worked as a national trainer for the NWTU . From 1984 to 1988 he was internationally successful as the national coach of the DTU .

Tournament doctor

Afterwards he remained connected to Taekwondo for several years as a tournament doctor. a. at the world level at the WTF umbrella organization. Jung has been a tournament doctor at the ATP tournament for tennis professionals in Halle (Westphalia) , the Gerry Weber Open, since 1993 .

Sports medic

Jung has been a specialist in surgery since 1990 , with an additional qualification in sports medicine and chiropractic . 1991 followed the doctorate at the University of Bonn . Since 2000 he has been working as a sports medicine specialist in Berlin, focusing on shoulder and elbow surgery.

Dirk Jung died of cancer in November 2019 at the age of 63.
