North Rhine-Westphalian Taekwondo Union
The North Rhine-Westphalian Taekwondo Union (NWTU) is the state umbrella organization for Taekwondo in North Rhine-Westphalia , based in Engelskirchen . He is a member of the State Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia (LSB) and the German Taekwondo Union .
history
The NWTU e. V. was founded in 1981 and is the legal successor to the Taekwondo section of the North Rhine-Westphalian Judo Association (NWJV). The legal form is the registered association . According to the official strength report for 2015, 14,242 athletes of various ages are training in around 230 clubs. The association's president is Musa Çiçek .
Successful NWTU athletes
In the course of its existence, the NWTU has produced numerous successes on an international level. Most of the previous official German world champions, as well as numerous EM and World Cup medal winners in Taekwondo, come from North Rhine-Westphalia:

The first Turkish Taekwondo world champion Yilmaz Helvacioglu (-68 kg), who won the title in Copenhagen ( Denmark ) in 1983 , had started Taekwondo in Germany. Today he lives and trains in Bielefeld .

Olympians
Olympia 1988
At the first Olympic demonstration competitions in Seoul (South Korea) in 1988 , two NWTU athletes each won a bronze medal: the 1988 European champion and later DTU national coach Markus Woznicki , and the 1987 world champion Michael Arndt .
Olympia 2000
At the 2000 Olympics in Sydney by the NWTU took two athletes in part successful. The 1995 world champion Aziz Acharki from Bonn took 5th place in the weight class up to 68 kg after good preliminary fights and was only slightly defeated by the later double Olympic champion (2000 and 2004) from the USA Steven Lopez . In the Olympic qualification tournament at international level, Acharki was able to defeat Lopez in a preliminary fight in Poreč and won a bronze medal after an injury-related task. The Bielefeld European Champion Fadime Helvacioglu retired early from the women in the preliminary fights up to 49 kg.
Olympia 2004
At the 2004 Summer Games in Athens , the two-time world champion Erdal Aylanc from Velbert narrowly missed the qualification.
Olympia 2008
The three-time European champion Levent Tuncat qualified in 2007 at the world qualifying tournament in Manchester for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing in the -58 kg weight class.
The two athletes Pinar Budak (NWTU) and Sümeyye Gülec each won a bronze medal in January 2008 in Istanbul. Together with Daniel Manz , four German TKD athletes were represented in Beijing. At the suggestion of the DTU, on July 15, 2008, the German Olympic Sports Confederation announced the participation of Helena Fromm in the Summer Olympics. Daniel Manz achieved fifth place in his weight class, the other fighters were eliminated in the preliminary fights.
Youth Olympic Games 2010
The first Youth Olympic Games took place in Singapore in 2010 . The German Taekwondo team was represented by four fighters. Norbert Szekely (NWTU) was able to achieve a qualification for the -48 kg weight class in Mexico, but was not nominated by the DTU. Ibrahim Ahmadsei (NWTU) was second in the Youth Olympic Games over 73 kg, Antonia Katheder also won a silver medal at 63 kg.
Olympia 2012
The following athletes were nominated by the DTU Performance Committee for the test event for the 2012 Olympic Games: Levent Tuncat (NWTU) in the –68 kg weight class, Alberto Celestrín –80 kg for men, and Katharina Weiss over 67 kg and Sabrina Nölp –49 kg with the ladies. At the European qualification tournament, the third place in the World Cup, Sümeyye Manz, secured a ticket for the Olympics in Kazan up to 49 kg. Levent Tuncat retired early in the -58 kg weight class.
Even Helena Fromm filed a 2nd place in the qualifying tournament in Kazan kg in the weight category -67, in order to qualify for London. Alberto Celestrin, however, like his male colleague, retired early.
Sümeyye Manz lost her first Olympic preliminary round match against the fighter from Taiwan and was eliminated early. After good preliminary rounds, Helena Fromm finally won the bronze medal in the semifinals and won a medal for the German Taekwondo sport again after 12 years .
Olympia 2016
The NWTU athlete Levent Tuncat has nominated himself for the 2016 Summer Olympics and starts in the -58 kg weight class in Rio.
Districts and service centers
The NWTU organizes its sports traffic in four districts, in which almost 230 clubs are registered:
- Arnsberg district
- District of Düsseldorf
- Cologne district
- District Münster / Detmold .
To promote competitive sport, the NWTU maintains a total of four state training centers recognized by the LSB, as well as one district training center in each of which the youngsters are regularly trained:
- Part-time boarding school Swisttal
- State performance base Bonn - Bad Godesberg
- State performance base Düsseldorf
- State performance base Essen
- State performance base Letmathe (near Iserlohn )
and an official federal service base in Düsseldorf. Furthermore, there is the possibility for the squad athletes at the Olympic base in Cologne-Leverkusen-Bonn to take part in the OSP measures. The first part-time Taekwondo boarding school in North Rhine-Westphalia was founded in 2001 in Witten under the direction of Muhammed Kocer as the person responsible for Taekwondo in the combination of the sports of Taekwondo, Judo, wrestling and triathlon. This was also recognized by the NWTU from 2001 and was supervised by the then regional coach and later national coach Markus Wozniacki .
