Gerhard Ellrodt

Gerhard Ellrodt (* July 8, 1909 , † February 14, 1949 ) was a Leipzig resistance fighter, as well as a functionary of the Communist Youth Association of Germany and later the SED .

Life

Gerhardt Ellrodt was the son of the USPD and KPD politician Richard Friedrich Ellrodt . He was a mechanic and typesetter by profession. In 1927 he became a member of the KJVD and was there agitpropleiter for West Saxony. He became a member of the KPD in 1930.

After 1933 he took part in the illegal work and was a member of the Leipzig resistance group around Georg Schumann . In March 1945 Ellrodt fled from Gestapo detention and began to unite anti-fascist forces as well as anti- Hitler and war opponents in districts and large companies of Leipzig in order to be able to hand over the city of Leipzig to the approaching US troops without resistance.

After 1945

When the SPD and KPD were forced to form the SED , he became a member of the SED . Until the dissolution of the SED district association of West Saxony in 1947, he was its secretary for advertising, training and youth, then until his death a member of the secretariat of the SED regional association of Saxony.

Honors

Gerhard-Ellrodt-Straße in Leipzig's Großzschocher district was named after him. In addition, a polytechnic high school in Leipzig bore his name.
