From the 10-year prison sentence that was imposed, he served almost 5 years of solitary confinement in Brandenburg until his early release due to the Dehler initiative. After his release from prison in 1956, he fled Eisenach to Berlin and was recognized as a political refugee. In Cologne (1958) and Düsseldorf (1962) he passed his first and second state exams.
