Gerhard Knorz

Gerhard Knorz (born June 21, 1951 ; † March 16, 2015 ) was a German information scientist .

Life

Gerhard Knorz studied computer science at the TH Darmstadt. In 1983 he was awarded a Dr.-Ing. PhD. From 1986 to 2014 he was Professor of Information Science at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (hda). From 2002 to 2010 he was Vice President of the hda. He was significantly involved in the development of the overall study program in information sciences and has been dean of the information and documentation department for many years. Documentation languages ​​were his main focus. He was visiting / substitute professor for computational linguistics at the University of Konstanz (1985), databases at the TH / TU Darmstadt (1989/90) and information retrieval at the TH / TU Darmstadt (1992).

He was considered one of the founding personalities of German-language information science. For many years he was a board member of the University Association for Information Science and a member of the scientific advisory board for the series.

Knorz was long-time editor (1985–90 and 1993–2000) of the LDV-Forum , the journal of the Society for Linguistic Data Processing (GLDV), today's Society for Language Technology and Computational Linguistics (GSCL).

Knorz had suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) since 2008 and died as a result of the disease.
