Gerhard von Haren , the elder (* around 1375; † before 1422) was a lay judge and mayor of the imperial city of Aachen .

Live and act

The son of the married couple Adam van Haren, knight and lord of Voerendaal , and the Mechtildis von Cortenbach came from the Haren-Voerendaal line of the old patrician family Van Haren from the former rule of Valkenburg . He was the first of the family to move to the Free Imperial City of Aachen at the end of the 14th century , where he became the progenitor of the new and respected family branch there.

Gerhard von Haren was originally interested in taking over the office of Jülich Vogt or Meier in Aachen, which Rainald von Jülich had promised him, but which ultimately did not materialize. Instead, von Haren was elected mayor of Aachen in 1411 , without being a member of the aldermen himself.

Van Haren achieved significant prosperity and acquired the Hanbruch estate from Dietrich von Gülpen in 1409 and the Meierhof Gut Baenlä, which is still in existence today and which is under monument protection, as well as some city apartments around 1413 . Through his marriage to Mette (Mechtildis) Holzappel zu Täsch, he also came into the possession of Gut Kalkofen and the Lewenberg House , an old town palace located at Büchelstrasse 1137 at that time. From this marriage two sons emerged: Gerhard the Younger († 1458) and Adam von Haren, the Elder († 1454), who both later belonged to the college of lay judges and also temporarily held the office of mayor.
