Germanen (stress on the third syllable, English germanene ) is the name for a modification of germanium with a two-dimensional structure. It was discovered in September 2014. Similar substances are, for example, graphene and silicene .

Manufacture and Discovery

Germanic peoples were first created by applying atoms of the element germanium to a surface made of gold using molecular beam epitaxy . Studies on alternative manufacturing processes and carrier materials have been published by other research groups.

Germanic is a "graphene-like nano-layer with bulges".

Theoretical calculations have shown that the physical properties of the Germanens resemble those of graphene and silicene.

Further germanium atoms can attach to an existing germanium layer in pairs, one atom of the pair on each side of the nano-layer. These couples attract each other and can form regular structures. These change the electrical and magnetic properties of the original Germanic.
