Gerrit Jacob de Vries (born November 28, 1905 in Haastrecht , † October 7, 1990 in Baarn ) was a Dutch classical philologist ( Graezist ).

De Vries was the son of the Reformed pastor Simon de Vries (1877-1952) and his wife Jansje Kraaij. He attended grammar schools in Arnhem and Zwolle . Under the influence of his teacher of ancient languages, Pieter-Jan Enk , he began to study ancient languages at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam , where RH Woltjer and Hendrik Josephus Pos became his teachers. After his candidate exam he continued these studies at the University of Utrecht with Carl Wilhelm Vollgraff . He finished his studies in 1928 and received his doctorate in 1929 at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam near Pos with a dissertation Bijdrage tot de psychologie van Tertullianus . He was a teacher at the Gereformeerd Gymnasium in Amsterdam for a year and then from 1928 to 1955 at the Christelijk Lyceum in Zeist . In 1946 he married Woutrina Adriana van Haaften. De Vries was an active member of the Hervormde Kerk since 1946 . In 1955 he was appointed associate professor of Greek studies and that same year full professor, after RH Woltjer was killed in an accident. In 1971 he retired. His successor was Dirk Marie Schenkeveld .

De Vries worked mainly on Greek literary theory and style, especially on Pseudo-Longinus ' work On the Sublime . He was so preoccupied with Plato that he found himself challenged to write a reply to Karl Popper's attack on the philosopher. His main work is the commentary on Phaedrus .
