Gershom Carmichael

Gershom Carmichael (* around 1672 in London (?); † 1729 ) was a Scottish philosopher .

Life

Carmichael was probably born in London to a Presbyterian pastor. In 1691 he finished his studies at the University of Edinburgh and three years later became a master (teacher) at the University of Glasgow . In 1727 this office was transformed into a professorship in moral philosophy.

The philosopher Sir William Hamilton called him the "true founder of Scottish philosophy". Carmichael wrote Breviuscula Introductio ad Logicam , a treatise on logic and the science of the intellect. He was the teacher of Francis Hutcheson .
