The Gertrude Rock was a cliff in front of Cape Adare , the northern tip of the Adare Peninsula in the north of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . It belonged together with the Rose Rock to the group of cliff rocks known as The Sisters . It broke up between 2003 and 2006 and sank into the sea.
The naming of this rock and the Rose Rock was made by Victor Campbell , leader of the northern group in the British Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913), at the suggestion of George Murray Levick . It was named after two sisters of the same name from a song that was popular at the time.
