Henri Gervex
Henri Gervex (born December 10, 1852 in Paris , † June 7, 1929 in Paris) was a French painter of realism .
life and work
Gervex learned painting under Eugène Fromentin , Alexandre Cabanel and Pierre Nicolas Brisset and made his debut in the Salon of 1873 with a sleeping beauty after bathing , who in 1874 played a satyr with a bacchante (Musée du château des ducs de Bourbon, Montluçon) and in 1875 Diana and Endymion followed.
In 1876 he entered the field of modern realism with a mortuary examination in the hospital , in which he progressed more and more to naturalism .
The main works of this genre are Communion in the Trinité Church (1877) and Rolla based on a poem by Alfred de Musset . This 173 × 220 cm painting, which was excluded from the World Exhibition in 1878 because of its provocative nudity, is now in the Musée des beaux-arts de Bordeaux in Bordeaux . Furthermore, the decorative paintings for Paris town halls and other public buildings such as the civil wedding and the canal basin of La Villette are well-known works of the painter.
In 1913, Henri Gervex was accepted into the Académie des Beaux Arts .
