description

The semi-detached house was built as a business and residential building, restaurant and café for the “Reichshof” before 1902 according to the plans of the Stuttgart architects Bihl & Woltz . The building was divided into two buildings by fire walls , which also belonged to different owners. In the facade, however, the two houses were treated as a whole.

While a commercial building was housed in the smaller part of the house on the lower floors when the house was completed, a restaurant with a café and a hall was set up in the larger part 17b. At that time, the upper floors had apartments of 4 or 6 rooms. The restaurant kitchen with its ancillary rooms was set up on the courtyard front in the basement. No. 17b housed the Reichshof restaurant, among other things . The equipment of the restaurant on the ground floor was designed "in the taste of the newer Munich beer taverns" , but "avoiding all richer forms" . By "substantial effect" at that time were in Rabitzputz (flat barrel vault) produced vaulted ceiling over the front part and the rear hall (cross vaults on free pillars). During the Third Reich, regular discussion evenings by the Stuttgart branch of the NSDAP were held in the rear room . Upon completion, the hall for 300 people on the first floor also had a vault-like ceiling. It was used for club celebrations and comedian performances.

The installation was also worth mentioning at the time - "The technical equipment [...] is absolutely state-of-the-art". In addition to the low-pressure heating, the systematically implemented ventilation with ducts located in the vaulted gussets should also be mentioned. The building half 17b is used today as a hotel. The facade is made entirely of light gray Haller sandstone and shows rich architectural sculptures. The purpose of the interior spaces was presented in a humorous way by the building sculpture.
