from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

History of the University in Europe is a four-volume work on the history of the University in Europe from the Middle Ages to the present, edited by Walter Rüegg with the participation of numerous specialist scientists . It was published on the initiative of the European Rectors' Conference from 1993 to 2010 by Verlag CH Beck .

"The intention of this joint effort is to compare and summarize the social framework conditions and tasks, the characteristics of intellectual and institutional identity, the structures, designs and main problems of the European universities in their historical bases and changes, but also in their regional differences, based on the current state of research to represent. "

Volume 1 is dedicated to the university history of the Middle Ages, Volume 2 deals with the period from the Reformation to the French Revolution (1500–1800), Volume 3 the period from the 19th century to the Second World War (1800–1945) and Volume 4 the period from Second World War to the end of the 20th century.

The individual volumes each show an identical systematic structure. The first part ("Topics and Basics") offers a thematic introduction to the epoch covered. The second part (“Structures”) gives an overview of the university's structures. The third part ("The Students") documents the academic training of the students, everyday student life and professional careers. The fourth part ("Science") finally shows the fundamental development of the sciences in the periods under consideration.
