Story of a Peasant Girl (French: Histoire d'une Fille de Ferme ) is a novella by Guy de Maupassant . It was first printed on March 26, 1881 in the Revue politique et littéraire .

The farmer's maid Rose has a love affair with the servant Jacques, as a result of which she becomes pregnant. Jacques does not keep the promise made to her to marry her. He secretly leaves the courtyard. Rose learns that her mother is about to die. She receives leave and goes to her home village, where her mother dies on the day of her arrival. Here, Rose gives birth to a weak boy whom she takes care of with neighbors. After her return, she works extremely hard because she is hoping for a wage increase. She urgently needs the money for her son. The farmer, who has no knowledge of the son's existence, proposes marriage to Rose. According to his considerations, having a capable wife is better business than an expensive maid. With the marriage, Rose rose to be a farmer's wife. The relationship between the married couple is noticeably deteriorating. Her husband blames Rose for not giving him children. That's why he even mistreats her. In the course of an argument, Rose confesses that she already has a child. Fortunately, the farmer takes on Rose's son on the farm.
