The Society for Real Estate Research ( gif ) was founded in 1993 by 27 members. The number of members rose to around 1,300 at the beginning of 2011. The seat of the association is Wiesbaden . The registered association pursues exclusively and directly charitable purposes.

target

The aim of the gif is to promote research, to combine theory and practice and to create a basis for scientific exchange and know-how transfer within the courses, but also between science and business.

With the founding of gif, a platform was created whose members feel committed to common goals:

  • Increase in market transparency
  • Creation of standards for the analysis and evaluation of markets and objects
  • Development of guidelines and definitions for real estate-related topics
  • Stimulation, funding and awarding of real estate-related research
  • Maintaining national and international contacts
  • Further development of professionalism
  • Support of training and further education
  • Organization of public forums on current topics with a scientific character
  • Publication of Germany's first scientific journal for real estate economics (ZIÖ)

history

Until the early 1990s, the subject of real estate was hardly given any attention at German universities, technical colleges and vocational academies. It was accordingly bad for training and further education as well as for property-related research in the Federal Republic. As a result, the practice suffered from inadequately prepared junior staff for their tasks and from the lack of research / practice transfer.

This was the reason for the founding members at the time to bring the gif to life.

organization

Members of the gif are people with a professional connection to the real estate industry and people who want to support research in the real estate industry. A distinction is made between personal and supporting membership. Discounts on the contribution are granted to students and doctoral candidates as well as pensioners, retirees and other inactive people.

Outstanding personalities can be made honorary members for special services to the association. Previous honorary members are Karl-Werner Schulte , Jürgen Ehrlich, Lutz Kehrberg, Hartmut Bulwien and Matthias Thomas.

Working groups

Members and external experts work in around 20 working groups on different tasks. The working group results are made available to the public as recommendations, definitions and guidelines. Many of the publications have now become industry standards and facilitate practical work in the real estate sector.

Research funding

The gif promotes research and teaching in the field of real estate management and related disciplines. It supports committed scientists and young scientists with grants / grants for selected research projects and special projects.

The interdisciplinary approach of the gif is reflected in the diversity of its members, their activities and the research projects.

GIF real estate research award

The gif has been awarding the gif real estate research award every year since 1995. Scientific papers on real estate topics in the categories of bachelor theses, diploma theses / master theses, doctorates / habilitation theses and other scientific papers can be submitted.

The invitation to tender encourages young people to perform well and harnesses their potential for the industry.

GIF in focus

The "gif in focus" is the club magazine of the gif and appears twice a year on current topics in the real estate industry. All editions are made available free of charge on the gif homepage.

Journal for Real Estate Economics (ZIÖ)

The gif publishes the Zeitschrift für Immobilienökonomie (Journal of Interdisciplinary Property Research). ZIÖ is the only scientific journal on this topic in the German-speaking area. The journal appears every six months and is made available to German university libraries free of charge. The editor is Karl-Werner Schulte, honorary professor at the University of Regensburg .

As is customary internationally, all submitted manuscripts are subjected to a double-blind review process. H. a manuscript is checked by at least two reviewers. Authors and reviewers do not learn their identity from each other. This procedure ensures the technical quality of the contributions. In 2015 the magazine was given a “C” ranking in the VHB Jourqual .

International network

Gif is part of an international network whose umbrella organization is the International Real Estate Society (IRES). At the European level, the European Real Estate Society (ERES) connects the national associations so that every member of the gif is automatically an associate member of the ERES. The gif thus maintains worldwide contacts and guarantees the exchange of research results beyond the borders of Germany. At the international level, the association acts as the “Society of Property Researchers, Germany”.
