Belarusian Language Society

The Society for Belarusian Language (Таварыства Беларускай Мовы / Tawarystwa Belaruskaj Mowy , abbreviated TBM; also Francysk Skaryna Society for Belarusian Language or Francysk Skaryna Society for Belarusian Language ) is a non-governmental organization in Minsk , which, according to the statutes, has the following goals: Belarusian language in Belarusian society, expansion of the use of Belarusian in all areas of life, protection of the purity and independence of the Belarusian language and working towards ensuring that Belarusian receives the real status of a state language in Belarus. It is named after Francysk Skaryna.

The association was founded in 1989; The founders included the Association of Writers of Belarus , the Belarusian Ministries of Education, Culture and Information and the Institute of Linguistics and Literature of the Academy of Sciences.

In recent years, the TBM has appeared primarily as a defender of the rights of Belarusian- speaking citizens, especially in relation to state institutions, which it accuses of one-sided preference for the Russian language . In addition, the organization supports the translation of all kinds of foreign language literature into Belarusian and the use of Belarusian by representatives of foreign organizations, diplomatic missions and companies operating in Belarus. She participates in the scientific discussion on the Belarusian language and gives recommendations on the language culture and orthography of Belarusian.

Journalistic activity

The TBM publishes the weekly newspapers Nascha Slowa (“Our Word”) and Nowy Tschas (“Neue Zeit”). “Nowy Tschas” is a weekly newspaper with a general theme, while the bulletin “Nascha Slowa”, which has been published since 1990, consists of articles dealing with the Belarusian language and literature and the TBM as an organization. "Nascha Slowa" is not a philological journal, but is aimed at members and a general audience interested in the Belarusian language, literature and the situation of Belarusian in society.

Chairperson

The historian and social democratic politician Aleh Trusau has been chairman since 1999 . His predecessors were the writers Nil Hilewitsch (1989–1997) and Henads Buraukin (1997–1999).
