The Society of Daughters of the Heart of Mary ( order abbreviation : FCM ( Filiae Cordis Mariae ); short form: "Society of the Heart of Mary " or "Daughters of the Heart of Mary"; French Filles du Cœur de Marie ) is a religious order of the Catholic Church .

history

The Society of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary was founded in the aftermath of the French Revolution in 1790 by Adélaïde-Marie Champion de Cicé and the Jesuit Pierre-Joseph Picot de Clorivière . The members of the women's order do not wear any religious costume and do not live in the enclosure ; the nuns either live alone or in small communities. The vows (obedience, chastity and poverty) also include availability, a sense of responsibility, frequent contact with the superior and with one another. From the inner relationship with Jesus Christ, the sisters live in the middle of the world according to the scriptural words of the founders:

  • "I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from evil." (Jn 17:15)
  • "I no longer call you servants, but friends." (Jn 15:15)
  • "Do what he tells you" (Jn 2,5)
  • “This is your mother” (Jn 17:29)

The sisters have been based in Germany since 1897 with branches in Berlin, Dortmund and Cologne.

Task and organization

The society has no special task and is only active apostolic in the areas of education, health or social affairs. There is the possibility of working in civil professions or as a missionary.

The approximately 1,400 sisters are in Europe (Belgium, Germany, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland, Spain), Africa (Ethiopia, Benin, Burkina-Faso, Kenya, Madagascar, Rwanda), Asia (India, Japan , Pakistan, Philippines), South and North America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Canada, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, USA, Venezuela).

The leadership of the entire religious community at the headquarters in Paris is taken over by the general superior with her four general assistants. María del Carmen Vergara González from Mexico has been Superior General since August 2011 .

A well-known sister was the German doctor Ruth Pfau († August 10, 2017) ("The Angel of Karachi").
