Social Defender

The social defense attorney was a participant in criminal proceedings in the GDR who, in certain cases , stepped alongside the criminal defense attorney .

The social defense lawyer had to present a characterization of the accused as well as an assessment of the crime from the point of view of the collective in terms of the defense. He had the right to question witnesses and experts and to make applications independently. A guarantee proposed by him on behalf of the collective could lead to parole. He mostly came from the defendant's circle of colleagues .
