Linkage referred to in the mechanical engineering and in the construction of a plurality of fixed or articulated interconnected rod- shaped metal sections (bars), the movements and forces transmitted. Examples of use are brake linkages , clutch linkages , steering linkages and coupling gears .

Brake linkage

The brake linkage is the entirety of the rods and joints that transfer and translate the movement between the force that initiates the brake and the brake pad .

Relatively simple linkages can be found on old bicycle brakes at the front, for example, where a flat rubber block was pressed directly onto the front wheel via a deflection linkage, or even today on many motorcycle rear wheel brakes, where the braking force is transmitted to the brake shaft lever of a drum brake via a foot brake lever and a pull rod .

Complex brake linkages are mainly found on the brakes of simple railroad vehicles , in which a brake cylinder for the actuation of z. B. eight brake pads on two axles of a freight wagon is responsible. The brake linkage ensures (disregarding a different linkage resistance due to wear) that the same pressure force acts on the wheels on all brake pads.

Simpler brake linkages can be found e.g. B. on disc brakes , in which the brake pads are pressed on both sides of the disc brake with the same force via a pincer movement.
