The health system in St. Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha is based on state-organized and financed medical care .

St. Helena

St. Helena as the most populous of the three sub-areas of the British overseas territory St. Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha forms the center of medical care. The government of St. Helena (Health Directorate) largely finances medical care for the population. Low fees for medical treatments are required from residents of the island; Non-UK citizens must pay the actual costs. On average, four inhabitants of the island need treatment outside the country per year, due to agreements in Cape Town in South Africa until August 2018 . Since then, patients have been transferred to Pretoria . On June 3, 2016, the first medical emergency flight from South Africa to the recently licensed St. Helena Airport took place.

Jamestown has the only hospital on the island with the General Hospital (39 beds). There is also a 40-bed care facility and five health centers.

Ascension

Medical care on Ascension is funded by the government. A health insurance is compulsory for foreign visitors. Ascension does not receive any support from DFID. Patients are transferred to two hospitals in Oxford for the treatment of serious illnesses .

In Georgetown there is a hospital for primary care with nine beds.

A doctor is present on Tristan da Cunha . This ensures basic medical care for the population. The Camogli health center reopened on June 9, 2017.

The government of the archipelago is supported in medical care by DFID and the Healthlink 3 project. All serious illnesses are treated in Cape Town, South Africa.
