Jamestown (officially City of James Town ) is the capital of St. Helena , one of the three equal parts of the British Overseas Territory of St. Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha . The city with 629 inhabitants (as of 2016) is the seat of the governor of the entire overseas territory and is located in the district of the same name. Jamestown has had city status since June 6, 1859 and is officially named City of James Town .

The Jamestown district of the same name also includes Rupert's Valley , where most of the island's industry and Rupert's Wharf is a port.

history

Jamestown was founded in 1659 by the British East India Company . The settlement was laid out as a fort and named after the Duke of York, later King James II of England ( English James II of England ) in 1660 .

Jamestown has had the status of a city with the official name "City of James Town" since Queen Victoria was raised in 1859 .

The story is also covered in the St. Helena Museum .

geography

Jamestown is located in the James Valley ( James Valley ), originally Chappel Valley or Church Valley was named after a small church (English Church ) made by Portuguese had been built navigators. The location is characterized by the steep east and west mountains, up to the James Bay ( James Bay ) on the Atlantic range.

Economy and Infrastructure

Jamestown is the economic center of the island. All major companies have their headquarters here. The port is of outstanding importance, as it was the only connection to the outside world in scheduled traffic until the airport opened. All goods and merchandise were delivered with the RMS St Helena .

Jamestown has churches, schools and the island's only hospital, St Helena General Hospital . A planned new hospital construction, supported by the European Development Fund with 21.5 million euros , was stopped after the EU membership referendum in the United Kingdom in 2016 . Instead, the money is to be invested in a submarine cable in the short term in order to ensure that the funds allocated from the development fund can be used quickly, as long-term financing of the hospital project appears uncertain against the background of the UK's exit from the EU .

The construction of the first hotel of an international hotel chain started on June 17, 2016. The Jamestown Hotel should be completed by the end of 2017.

Attractions

Jamestown is home to numerous buildings of historical interest, most notably from Georgian times. The city forms the tourist center of the island, as most of the sights, accommodations and other tourist facilities are located here. The most famous colonial historical buildings include:
