Rupert's Valley ( German  Ruperts Tal ), historically Seine Valley , is a valley on the island of St. Helena in the South Atlantic . It belongs administratively to the Jamestown District .

The valley was historically important as an important landing point for slaves . Most of the 26,000 slaves brought to St. Helena are said to have arrived here. Archaeologists assume that at least 5,000 slaves died here, of which the remains of 325 people were found by 2012.

Location and use

Rupert's Valley is north of the James Valley with the capital Jamestown. The valley joins the Atlantic Ocean at Rupert's Bay in the northwest . North of the valley is Rupert's Hill ( 405  m ), one of the highest peaks on the island .

The valley is mainly used industrially . Here is also the Rupert's Wharf since 2016, the only major pier and the only power station in the island. Further industrial expansion is planned (as of 2016).

There was a railway line in the valley .

Origin of name

The origin of the name is controversial. According to one thesis, this goes back to Ruprecht von der Pfalz, Duke of Cumberland , who is said to have landed here. According to another theory, Jan van Riebeeck named the valley in which Ruprecht of the Palatinate, Duke of Cumberland is said to have been based, because of his strong armament "to the fear of Prince Ruprecht".
