Shared leadership

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shared management (Engl. Shared leadership ) refers to the distribution of guidance to different players in the sense that there is one, but several leading not only in a team.

It is an established approach to leadership research . Related concepts, some of which are used synonymously, are collaborative leadership, complementary leadership and distributive leadership.

Definitions

Shared leadership can be defined in different ways, with all definitions describing a similar phenomenon, namely leadership by more than one person or the division of leadership between different participants.

Pearce and Sims define it as leadership that comes from team members, rather than just an appointed leader. Pearce and Conger understand it to be a dynamic, interactive influencing process between individuals and groups with the aim of leading one another, to achieve group or organizational goals, or both. This influence often includes lateral influence, i.e. by peers, hierarchical influence that is upward or downward at other times. Furthermore, shared leadership arises when group members actively and purposefully hand over the role of leader to one another, as required by the environment or the conditions within which the group operates. Hoch and Dulebohn are of the opinion that shared leadership describes collective team leadership by the team members and is characterized by collaborative decision-making and shared responsibility for the results.

As Pearce, Manz and Sims summarize, all definitions of shared leadership involve an influencing process that relies on more than just downward influencing of followers or employees by an appointed leader. In addition, almost all concepts describe the broad distribution of power and influence within a group of individuals and contrast them with the concentration of power and influence in the hands of a single person who takes on the role of the dominant leader.
