getmail is a mail retrieval agent , i.e. a program for simply collecting emails. It is a simple alternative to fetchmail and is written in Python . The motivation for the development of getmail was the criticism of fetchmail, especially because of security gaps that had become known.
As a console program , getmail is controlled via parameters when calling and configuration files . It can pick up e-mails from POP3 and IMAP4 servers and supports SSL / TLS for both protocols. E-mails are saved directly in the mailbox (supported formats are mbox and Maildir ) or transferred to another local delivery program . External programs can be integrated as filters via the configuration file in order to check e-mails before delivery, e.g. B. for malware or spam .
In contrast to other mail retrieval agents, getmail itself does not support forwarding of mails via SMTP . The reason given by the developer is to prevent endless loops during delivery.
