fetchmail is a free console program . It fetches e-mails from POP , IMAP , ETRN , or ODMR- enabled mail servers and forwards them to (E) SMTP or LMTP- enabled mail servers or a local delivery program . It used to be criticized for its design and security vulnerabilities, but it is widely used on Unix-like systems and ships with some distributions.
The program also gained notoriety because it is mentioned by its interim author Eric Steven Raymond as a case study in what is probably the most famous essay on the subject of open source , The Cathedral and the Bazaar .
Some programmers , including Daniel J. Bernstein , Charles Cazabon, the developer of getmail , and Terry Lambert, a developer of FreeBSD , have sharply criticized the design of fetchmail and discovered several security flaws.
