Grain store

The Getreidestadel (also: grain box ) in Bad Reichenhall is the town's former granary .

The building is a listed building and is entered in the Bavarian Monument List under number D-1-72-114-28 .

history

Duke George the Rich , who bought up almost all of the town's brewhouses and thus made salt production in Bad Reichenhall a state monopoly, gave the order in 1479 that the town had to stock up on enough food and a grain box. The city council therefore decided to build a generously dimensioned grain box , which was expanded again 70 years later and called the Ducal Box . The stone building had a total of 13 rooms on two floors for the storage of grain. Since hardly any grain was grown in the vicinity of the city, it was bought from traders in order to always have a sufficient supply for the winter and for times of need.

In addition to storing grain, the building has also served other purposes in the recent past, until the town's local history museum finally moved in and was opened on May 26, 1967. Since then, the museum has been housed in the Getreidestadel. After the local history museum was closed for thirteen years, it was reopened in November 2019 as the “Reichenhall Museum” (spelling: ReichenhallMuseum ) after an investment of 1.25 million euros in “interior design and redesign” .

location

The Getreidestadel is located in Getreidegasse, which is named after the town's granary. Getreidegasse connects Wörgötterplatz with Angerl and lies within the former city wall of Bad Reichenhall .
