The greenhouse dagger snail ( Zonitoides arboreus ) is a type of snail from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora). It originally occurs in North America , but has since been brought to Central Europe , where it is found mainly in or near greenhouses, from which the name is derived.

features

The case is low-conical and right-hand wound. It measures 4.5 to 5 mm in diameter, with a height of up to 3 mm. It has 4.5 closely wound whorls. This creates a comparatively narrow navel. The casing is yellowish brown and translucent; outside fine, irregularly striped and shiny.

Occurrence and way of life

The species lives in moist biotopes in the forest. In Europe it is mainly found in greenhouses. In the meantime, however, it appears that some outdoor populations have also established themselves. The species feeds on withered and fresh leaves of various plants.

distribution

The species is native to North America. However, it has now been abducted to Europe, Australia, Kamchatka, Japan, Iceland, Israel, Madeira, South Africa and Hawaii.
