As water pollution refers to the introduction of chemical, biological, physical or other hazardous materials in standing or running water .

Factors

The essential factors for such an influence are among others:

  • Power plants and the manufacturing industry that need cooling water and thus increase the water temperature.
  • Sewage treatment plants that discharge treated wastewater .
  • Agriculture and livestock farming through the use of chemical fertilizers or manure.
  • Salts that can come from industry, mining and agriculture.
  • Industrial wastewater with organic compounds or heavy metal compounds that are difficult or impossible to break down, which can cause problems in drinking water treatment or enter the food chain.

Chemical, biological and physical indicators can be used to determine the pollution of a body of water.
