The Union Church and Diakonie eV, based in Berlin, sees itself as a trade union for employees of the Protestant and Catholic Church in Germany as well as the Diakonisches Werk (DW) and Caritas . It was founded in 1993 and has four regional associations in Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, in the ecclesiastical province of Saxony and in Oldenburg. Information on the number of members is not known. The federal chairman is Christian Hannasky.

The GKD opposes the special church labor law ( third way ) and advocates that general labor law and the Works Constitution Act are also applied in the church area and that collective agreements are also concluded for church employees. This is in contrast to the Association of Church Employees , which sees itself as a partner of the Church and Diakonie. The GKD belongs to a collective bargaining association with the Education and Science Union (GEW) and the United Service Union (Verdi), which has signed a collective agreement with the Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia.
