Ghutschan , in English transcription Quchan ( Persian قوچان) Is the capital of County Ghutschan in the Razavi Khorasan Province . In 2016 the city had about 102,000 inhabitants. The city is located about 125 kilometers southeast of the provincial capital Mashhad in northeastern Iran .

location
Ghuchan is located in northeastern Iran in the Razavi-Khorasan province at an altitude of 1149 meters above sea level. The city is located south of the border with Turkmenistan , near the Turkmen capital Ashgabat . The city is located in an earthquake zone and has already experienced several severe earthquakes.

The Köppen-Geiger climate classification system classifies the climate as semi-arid (BSk).
history
On June 20, 1747, Nader Shah was murdered in Ghuchan. He was attacked by 15 conspirators and stabbed with a sword. Nader was able to kill two of the assassins before he died.
A devastating earthquake in 1893 killed thousands of residents in Ghuchan. After another earthquake in 1895, the city had to be rebuilt east of the old city center.
economy
The city is located in an agricultural region. Grain and wine are grown near the town.
education
The Quchan University of Advanced Technologies Engineering was founded in 2006. There is also an offshoot of the Azad Islamic University in the city .
