Giovanni Francesco Pico della Mirandola

Giovanni Francesco Pico della Mirandola (also Gian Francesco , Giovan Francesco , Gianfrancesco ; * 1469 in Mirandola (Emilia-Romagna) ; † October 16, 1533 ibid) was an Italian philosopher and the nephew and pupil of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola .

Live and act

He was the son of Galeotto I Pico della Mirandola (1442–1499), an Italian condottiere , and Bianca Maria d'Este, daughter of Niccolò III. d'Este .

Pico became significant in the history of philosophy through his skepticism , which he formulated in his Examen vanitatis doctrinae gentium (1520) before the publication of the writings of Sextus Empiricus - which he knew, however , and thus referred to Pyrrhonism for the first time since ancient times . This skeptical position, which he defended against the Aristotelian school philosophy of his time, was entirely in the service of his Christian faith, which is why some historians of philosophy (such as Richard Popkin ) do not want to assign him a significant position in the history of the Renaissance skepticism. In addition, Pico wrote biographies of his uncle Giovanni Pico and Savonarola, whom he admired . Pico was u. a. friends with Willibald Pirckheimer and other German humanists with whom he was in correspondence.

Gianfrancesco and his last fourteen year old son Alberto were murdered by Gianfrancesco's nephew Galeotto II Pico in 1533.
