description

Heade's works of art like this painting, with their very striking contrast between the brightly lit flowers and the dark background, are among the first ever 19th-century still lifes in the United States. They also stimulate the imagination of the beholder - the exhibiting museum itself associates with "their rich colors, full and curvy contours, their basic opulence and the implicit perfume scent of the flowers, possibly unclothed women leaning back lazily on luxurious couches".
