description

With this picture the painter shows in an outstanding way a balance between the contrasts that occur in landscapes. The meandering river, which leaves the section shown in the right half into the background, is absorbed by the optical weight of the hay bale and the apple tree on the left. The rhythm of the river's movements is reflected in the pattern that the tree tops and clouds draw in the sky. The pink clouds are reflected in the water in the center front of the picture, and the tree leaning to the left is matched by the tall and thin clouds in the upper right corner.

The primary motif of the painting - the contrast of sunlight and shadow - forms the conceptual roof over the individual picture elements and can be traced, for example, from the shadow path of the clouds or the light path of the hay bale.
