Gibbs Island ( Russian Остров Рожнова Ostrow Roschnowa ) is an uninhabited island in the South Shetland Islands and is located 20 km southwest of Elephant Island .
James Weddell , an officer in the British Royal Navy , marked this island on the map with the name Gibbs in 1825 . Since then the name has been established internationally.
Special
The stone grave of a German seaman lies on the island . On the cross of the unusually elaborately designed grave is the inscription in German:
" Wilhelm Tolz, sailor from Husum, 1875 - 1912. Drowned by someone else's hand. Rest in peace ".
