Foundry place

A green area in the Leipzig district of Plagwitz is popularly referred to as Gießerplatz .

The square is bordered by Siemensstrasse in the north, Gerhardstrasse in the east, Antonienstrasse in the south and the eponymous Gießerstrasse in the west, the name of which goes back to the Meier & Weichelt foundry built on the street in 1872.

The site of the Kleinzschocher windmill was located on the site until 1889 . In the course of the planned development of the area with workers' houses in open block-edge construction, which began in 1898, a green area was created on this area, which should function as the center of the district.

In the adjoining houses there was originally a variety of retail stores to ensure basic supplies. The “Mätzschkers Festsäle” inn (formerly “Zur Windmühle”), also known as “Ballhaus Leipzig”, is located on Gießerstrasse. The square has been redesigned several times since its inception. A well was last dug in 1984. According to the official municipal structure of Leipzig from 1992, Gießerplatz is now part of the Plagwitz district.
