Gigbag (also gig bag ) is the name for a padded bag for musical instruments . This Anglicism, which is also common in German, is composed of gig (musician's jargon for a live performance or an engagement) and bag .

Purpose and execution

The gig bag is intended to protect the musical instrument, which is usually individually packed in it, from moisture, dirt and damage during transport and storage. For the latter purpose, gigbags are padded with different thicknesses, depending on the version, or lined with foam and partially reinforced with plywood . The outer shell of most gig bags is made of sturdy synthetic fabric ( e.g. nylon ) or synthetic leather ; high-quality gig bags can be made of real leather. Gigbags usually have at least one handle and two shoulder straps with which the instrument can be carried on the back like a backpack. Most gigbags also have external pockets for various accessories such as sheet music, instrument cables (for electrically amplifiable musical instruments) and care products for the instrument.

The advantage of gigbags over other protective and transport containers for musical instruments is their low weight. Their disadvantage is the lower protection against mechanical loads (pressure, drop, impact) compared to more stable containers. At higher demands for the protection of instruments, for example during transport as cargo , therefore most stable instrument case come in rigid construction such as flight cases used.
