Luigi "Gigi" Meroni (born February 24, 1943 in Como , † October 15, 1967 in Turin ) was an Italian football player .

Life

Meroni made his debut at Como Calcio in 1961 , moved to CFC Genoa and in 1964 to Torino Calcio , where he celebrated his greatest successes. Meroni was a strong dribbler, fast and dangerous right winger; In allusion to its elegance and agility as well as to the shirt color of Torino, it was nicknamed "La Farfalla Granata" (German "The Garnet Red Butterfly").

Gigi Meroni was considered one of the greatest Italian football talents of his time and was an idol in Turin. Not only his spectacular style of play, but also his eccentric appearance attracted attention, which is why he has often been compared to George Best . He wore long hair, which was completely unusual in Italy at the time and led to the exclusion from the national team several times; he dressed in unusual ways and created various design objects and paintings. A planned move to city rivals Juventus Turin was canceled due to outraged protests among the Turin population.

Memorial stone at the accident site

After a league game against Sampdoria Genoa , Meroni was hit by a car while crossing a street and died of the injuries. The driver of the accident car, a fan of Torino and an admirer of Meroni, was Attilio Romero, who would later run the club as president.

An amateur soccer team in Munich is named after Meroni: US Gigi Meroni Itel 1970.
