Gilbertiner
The Gilbertines were a religious monk and nun order from the Middle Ages and represent the only purely English monastic order.
In 1130 or 1135, St Gilbert of Sempringham founded a spiritual brotherhood in Lincolnshire . Since Pope Eugene III. did not allow them to join the Cistercians , they formed their own association in 1148. The nuns lived according to the Rule of St. Benedict , the men as Augustinian Canons ( Augustine of Hippo ).
At the time of the Reformation , the Gilbertines had 21 branches in England. In 1519 the order was canceled.
