Gilgamesh ( Japanese ギ ル ガ メ ッ シ ュ , Girugamesshu ) is a manga by the illustrator Shōtarō Ishinomori . In 2003, a Group TAC- produced implementation as an anime series followed. The work can be classified into the genres of drama and science fiction .

action

The tomb of the legendary Sumerian king Gilgamesh is discovered. Since, according to a legend, supernatural powers are to be hidden in it, a research laboratory is built above the tomb. The project is called Heavens Gate . After a while, however, the scientists realized that their discoveries could pose a great threat to humanity and decided to stop their research. But the scientist Terumichi Madoka carried out a terrorist attack on the project, which went down in history as XX (read: Twin-X ). This creates an ominous fog in the laboratory, the so-called sheltering sky , which soon spreads over the entire globe and reflects the world below like a giant mirror. In addition, the fog affects the earth's magnetic field, which leads to crashes of numerous computer systems and the breakdown of electronic communication. The consequences are numerous famines and wars that wipe out a large part of humanity.

15 years later, 17-year-old Kiyoko and 14-year-old Tatsuya, the two children of the scientist Madoka, are trying to survive in this difficult situation. Since her father is a wanted criminal and her deceased mother is deeply in debt, they are constantly on the run from unscrupulous debt collectors. As they seek shelter in an abandoned building, they meet a group of men dressed in black, who put their pursuers to flight. The men introduce themselves as Gilgamesh and allegedly work for the father of the two, who now calls himself Enkidu . But suddenly a gang of youngsters emerges who embroil the rescuers of Kiyoko and Tatsuya in a bloody fight. In front of the two of them, the Gilgamesh transform themselves into bizarre monsters, whereupon they pass out. When they regain consciousness, they find themselves in the hands of the young people and their leader, the Countess von Werdenberg , who call themselves ORGA and are at war with the Gilgamesh. Kiyoko and Tatsuya are now at the center of a bitter war in which they are the key that could save or destroy the earth.

reception

The specialist magazine AnimaniA writes of a "mysterious sci-fi utopia" with a dark visual language. However, the imaginative plot ends abruptly, leaving questions unanswered. The pictures show the events in strong colors and in a style influenced by Gothic horror, but the poor quality of the animation is disappointing. The tone is good in both the Japanese and German versions.

The manga scene expressed itself insofar as the anime started very slowly and only gradually enlightened the viewer about the events, which left him in the dark for a long time. The characters should appear quite pale and hardly have any recognition value , while the colors "red, black and white" predominate. However, these should contribute to the mood in combination with the “wonderful, orchestral” music of Kaoru Wada. As a conclusion, despite the character design of Saki Okuse, which takes getting used to, there remains a difficult to understand story.
