The Gillamoos , the " Hallertau Festival " in Abensberg , is one of the oldest fairs in Bavaria . In 2020, the Gillamoos was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
The origin of the Gillamoosmarktes located in a Giles - pilgrimage and was first mentioned in the 1313th Since 1583 the fair has been celebrated at its current location at the gates of the historic old town of Abensberg. Name and grammatical gender "der" Gillamoos have developed from "(St.) Gil (g) a (m) Moos " ( Gilg is a southern German subsidiary form of Agidius ).
The day of remembrance for St. Giles is celebrated by the Catholic Church on September 1st, which is why the Gillamoos takes place every year on the first Sunday of September together with the previous days (Thursday to Saturday) and the following Monday.
On these five days there is a colorful program on the Gillamooswiese. The traditional wood sawing competition is held on Thursday. The official kick-off will take place on Friday with the Gillamoos excerpt on the festival meadow and the traditional tapping by the first mayor. This is followed by various events for all generations in the four festival tents, the wine tent and the Weißbierstadl as well as on the “Oidn Gillamoos”, a small separate historical festival area next door. In the tradition of pilgrimages, a Catholic service takes place in the beer tent on Sunday . On Monday a farmers market with cattle trade.
The Gillamoos is known beyond Bavaria for the pithy speeches of important German politicians. Similar to the political Ash Wednesday , the political morning pint takes place every year on Gillamoos Monday. What is special about this is that politicians from the various parties hold their events and speeches at the same time in four of the five festival tents as well as in the wheat beer bar, wine tent and in the city's restaurants. Since the federal and state elections take place close to Gillamoos, these events are regularly subject to content and media explosiveness. At the end of the Gillamoos, on Monday evening, after the political part in the morning, the Gillamoos dirndl queen and her vice queen will be elected.
The great importance of Gillamoos is characterized by the unwritten law that there should be no parallel events in the region on the weekend in question.
