Gilles (Egidius) von dem Buschoffsstave (* 15th century in Aachen ; † 16th century ) was a German lay judge and mayor of the imperial city of Aachen .

Live and act

Gilles von dem Buschoffsstave was the son of Peter von dem Buschoffsstave and a certain Zillien (Cäcilia); his family name comes from the inn "zo den Buschofsstaeve" ("Zum Bischofsstaeve"), which had been in the family for several generations and was located in the area of what was then Radermarkt, today's Münsterplatz. In 1495 he was admitted to the jury chair and elected mayor of the city of Aachen in 1507. He then sat for a few years as councilor in the Aachen city council.

Von dem Buschoffsstave was an energetic representative of the previous system of the guild order of 1450 according to the agreements of the Aachen gaff letter and vehemently opposed the efforts of the guilds and their split ends (sub-organizations) to reform this set of rules and to give the stronger guilds more say. Several trials, in which he was charged with perjury and defamation, testify to his attitude. After these accusations had landed before the Reich Chamber of Commerce (RKG), the lay judge was ordered by the Buschoffstave to step down from the lay judge's chair. A new application from his part to the RKG for re-admission to the lay jury was unsuccessful. After all, when public unrest broke out in 1513 on the occasion of the aforementioned amendment to the guild regulations, he was one of the first to flee the city towards Kornelimünster . Another charge against him for inciting murder landed again in 1514 before the RKG, although the verdict has not been passed down. What is certain, however, is that von Buschoffstave had to cease his writing activities from 1512 and nothing more is known about his further life.

Gilles von dem Buschoffstave was married to Katharina Schanternell, who was imprisoned for 14 days for allegedly misappropriating food during the uprising. The couple had two daughters.
