Gillesnuole

Gillesnuole is the name of a small chapel with a separate bell tower in the Swedish province of Västerbottens län in the municipality of Sorsele between the towns of Sorsele and Ammarnäs, 60 km from Sorsele. Church service is celebrated on three summer weekends, on the last Sunday in June, July and August.

On the church grounds there is a small cemetery, some Koten, a memorial stone and an old farmhouse from Hemfjäll used as a community center.

history

The first pastor in Gillesnuole from 1674 was Henrik Lyckselius. Around 1700 he named the first meeting place Illesnuöhle . In Gillesnuole he held a service twice a year, which the Sami were obliged to attend; probably at the turn of the month June / July and the beginning of September.

In 1740 or 1750 a new simple chapel was built in "Allesnuole". Church services were held here at the beginning of July and at the turn of the month between August and September.

After 1792, a better chapel was built together with a rectory in Allesnuole (Gillesnuole), as the previous construction was more like a barn or shed and the house for the pastor was more like a small stable. The money for a new chapel should be raised by the Sami through a new tax and the community should pay the costs for the apartment. In March 1796 10 settlers were obliged to build the chapel and the rectory for a payment of 8 shillings per day. In 1796 71 Reichstaler and 45 Schillings were incurred for labor and material costs. The roof was still missing; the construction was not completed until 1798 by 3 settlers for a payment of 50 Reichstalers.

Services were celebrated in Gillesnuole throughout the 18th century and well into the 19th century.

In 1853 it was decided to build a new prayer house by the lake Övre Gautsträsk at the foot of Ammarfjället. In 1858 this new chapel was built in Ammarnäs and from 1865 there were no more services in Gillesnuole.

The Gillesnuole chapel was then put up for auction. The new owner demolished the chapel and rebuilt it in Granåker, where it was used for threshing.

In the mid-1930s, the former chapel was donated to the community and rebuilt in its original location. From 1937 onwards there were meetings again.

In 1940 the interior of the chapel was rebuilt and a bell tower was erected. The furnishings were as stylish as possible, using the old chapel in Ammarnäs as a model.

The chapel in Gillesnuole was rededicated on July 8, 1940.
