The Gillies Islands are three small and rocky islands off the coast of the East Antarctic Queen Marie Land . They jut out of the Shackleton Ice Shelf 5 km north of Cape Moyes .
They were discovered by the crew of the west base of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . Mawson named it after Frederick Jacob M. Gillies (1874-1941), the chief engineer of his research vessel Aurora . During the US operation Windmill (1947-1948), the middle of the islands was the location of an astronomical observation station.
