Ginglymostoma is a genus of sharks in thenurse shark family(Ginglymostomatidae). The species occur in the West Atlantic and East Pacific .

features

Ginglymostoma are torpedo-shaped (semifusiform) nurse sharks with broadly curved jaws. Your eyes, which are laterally to the back (dorsolateral), are small. The nostrils are almost at the end of the snout, the moderately long nasal barbels reach behind the mouth. The dorsal fins are rounded at the tips. The first dorsal fin begins about above, slightly in front of or slightly behind the ventral fin, the second dorsal fin is significantly smaller than the first dorsal fin. The pectoral fins are broad, rounded-angular in young and almost sickle-shaped in large specimens, the tips are rounded. The pelvic fins are round in young animals, and also angular in adults. The anal fin is significantly smaller than the second dorsal fin and also rounded at the tip. The caudal fin is long, the length of the edge of the dorsal fin lobe in adult animals is more than 25% of the total length. The ventral fin lobe is absent in young animals and is only weakly developed in adults. The total number of vertebrae is 168 to 175.

Research history

The first description of the genus by Müller and Henle appeared in monthly reports of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin in 1837 without naming the associated species. It was not until 1838 in the Systematic Description of Plagiostomes that they assigned the species Ginglymostoma concolor ( syn. Of Nebrius ferrugineus ) and Ginglymostoma cirratum to the genus . Ginglymostoma cirratum was subsequently named as a type species .
