Gino de Dominicis

Gino de Dominicis (* 1947 in Ancona , Italy ; † November 29, 1998 in Rome ) was a controversial and mystified representative of Italian art from the 1960s to 1980s. He appeared as a painter , sculptor , philosopher and architect . His art has echoes of Arte Povera , the transavant-garde and also belongs to conceptual art , but in its complete independence it can hardly be assigned to a movement or group.

Gino de Dominicis studied at the Art Institute in Ancona with Edgardo Mannucci . He had his first solo exhibition in Rome at the Galleria L'Attico in 1969.

He spent some time traveling before settling in Rome in 1969. De Dominicis' work can be divided into two creative periods: the first between the late 1960s and the late 1970s, which belongs to conceptual art in the broadest sense, and the second period between the early 1980s and 1998, the year of his Death belongs to figurative painting.

De Dominicis made a first appearance at the Venice Biennale in 1972 with a young man with Down syndrome whom he used as an element of his art. Gino de Dominicis was a participant in Documenta 5 in Kassel , also in 1972 in the Individual Mythologies : Self-Presentation - Performances - Activities - Changes and Video department and also represented as an artist at Documenta 7 in 1982. He was also a multiple participant in the Venice Biennale.

Gino de Dominicis lived a varied life, he was considered an extravagant dandy and at the same time a mysterious hermit. He was so famous in Italy that he influenced a generation of Italian artists. He himself refused to reveal more details about his life and work.

His work, which consists of numerous paintings, drawings and installations, dealt intensively with existential topics such as life, death and immortality. All his artistic work was a struggle against the passing of time.
