Giorgos Kalafatis
Giorgos Kalafatis ( Greek Γιώργος Καλαφάτης , * 1890 in Athens ; † February 19, 1964 ibid) was a Greek athlete and football player .
Born just a few hundred meters from the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium in Exarchia , Giorgos Kalafatis was the founder of the Greek sports club Panathinaikos Athens . He is considered one of the greatest Greek athletes of all time and set a number of Greek records in jumping, throwing and sprinting competitions. However, since his greatest passion was football, Kalafatis applied to his club Panellinios Athens to set up a football department. When the club management did not comply with the request, Kalafatis decided to resign and to found a new club on his own. In autumn 1908 the Podosferikos Omilos Athinon (POA) was created, from which Panathinaikos Athens emerged in the following years .
Kalafatis is now considered to be one of the founding fathers of Greek football.
