Giovanni Antonio da Brescia

Giovanni Antonio da Brescia (active between 1490 and 1525 or later) was an Italian engraver and perhaps also a nielder and gem cutter .

Little is known about Giovanni Antonio da Brescia. He is said to have been a Carmelite and, in addition to the art of engraving, also made niels and gems. However, only his copperplate engravings are clearly documented, in which he initially followed Andrea Mantegna's style , whose strict manner probably suited him very well. He himself does not seem to have been a very talented draftsman, because his later works, in which he tried to break away from Mantegna's influence (he now oriented himself to Baldassare Peruzzi and Raffael , among others ), are both in the design of the composition and in her pictorial effect was not very successful. Its leaves are mostly with JO. ON. B [X]. signed. A possible identification with the medalist Antonio da Brescia is controversial and cannot be supported according to current knowledge.
